It's possible to do it, but I've yet to see any evidence that it is possible to do it well. The problem with selling an Intel Mac on eBay right now is the likelihood that the buyer will get buyer's remorse (due to the M1 being out) and send it back to you. It is one of those things that seems like a good idea on paper, but proves to be far more difficult in practice. Yes, you take a hit, but it's guaranteed cash with no chance of you losing the payment.

Pumping this ~$400-500 into my 7 year old computer doesn't make sense to me right now, so i'm much more inclined to see what I can get for it and just get a new one. A jack of all trades is master of none, after all you can have a great touch UI or a great mouse UI, but not both at the same time. Theres even the ability to upgrade buildings to increase their effectiveness or possibilities (e.g. I'm just at a place where my charger is on its very last leg and the battery is failing, I also want to upgrade the RAM. If you wiped the hard drive and replaced the battery it's probably got another couple years on her.
The battery is getting close to the end of its life, my computer still functions pretty damn well for being 7 years old. They said they could give me ~$300 (an estimate for now.) It's relatively old (2011) but I tried future-proofing it at the time, so it has some decent upgrades in it. I recently sold them my Mid 2012 15' Retina MacBook Pro for 900, which is quite a bit more than the 525 that I would have gotten trading it in at Best Buy.
